Gastric Bypass Q & A

  • What is gastric bypass?
  • Gastric bypass surgery reshapes your digestive system to help you lose excessive weight. Dr. David Dyslin uses the Roux-en Y gastric bypass technique to form a small pouch in your stomach and reroutes your small intestine into this pouch, creating a smaller stomach. As a result of the surgery, you’re only able to consume smaller portions of food in an effort to help you lose weight. Additionally, the surgery triggers your body to make changes in the hormones of your stomach to suppress your appetite and reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. If you suffer from chronic acid reflux, gastric bypass surgery can be an effective treatment. The rerouting of your small intestines means the acids in your stomach bypass the stomach, resulting in less acid reflux into your esophagus.
  • Am I a good candidate for gastric bypass?
  • Dr. Dyslin reviews your medical history and current health to determine if you’re a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery. He may recommend a gastric bypass if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. You may also qualify if your BMI is lower and you have a serious, weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes. In addition to being in otherwise good health, Dr. Dyslin ensures you’re able to make changes to your diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • What can I expect during gastric bypass?
  • Dr. Dyslin administers general anesthesia to keep you comfortable during surgery. He may perform the surgery using either laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgical techniques. Both minimally invasive types of surgery only require small incisions to access and reshape your stomach. Based on his surgical plan, Dr. Dyslin makes the necessary changes to your digestive tract. The procedure can take several hours. Following surgery, you’ll only need to recover from anesthesia and allow your digestive system a day or two to heal before you can eat again.
  • What’s involved in gastric bypass aftercare?
  • Initially, you can only consume liquids then soft, pureed foods. In the following 12 weeks, you’ll have to follow a specific diet that Dr. Dyslin creates for you. Based on your individual progress, he’ll determine when you can return to a normal diet. You also need several checkups during the first months after surgery to ensure you’re healing properly and following your diet.
